Where your New Jersey case will be heard

Green card and citizenship interviews for most of northern and central New Jersey take place at the USCIS Newark Field Office, in the Peter W. Rodino Federal Building at 970 Broad Street. Applicants in the southern counties, such as Camden, Burlington and Atlantic, go to the Mount Laurel Field Office instead. Your ZIP code decides which office you get. Removal cases are heard at the Newark Immigration Court, in that same building on Broad Street (our page on immigration cases in Newark lists every office there), or at the Elizabeth Immigration Court inside the Elizabeth Detention Center on Evans Street when the person is detained.

When we checked on August 18, 2026, USCIS estimated 14.5 months for a citizenship application at the Newark office, against 13.5 months in Philadelphia and 14 in Houston (our N-400 processing time guide has the details). A filing with gaps or the wrong evidence adds months on top of that.

Cases we take on for New Jersey clients

Most of our work is family immigration: petitions for spouses, parents and children, marriage green cards, K-1 fiancé(e) visas and adjustment of status for relatives who are already here. When someone's past gets in the way, an earlier overstay or an old criminal record, we file I-601 and I-601A waivers. After the green card comes citizenship, and N-600 certificates for children who became citizens through a parent.

New Jersey employers and professionals bring us work visa cases too, from H-1B petitions to O-1, L-1 and TN visas, plus employment-based green cards such as the EB-2 National Interest Waiver.

We also defend people in removal proceedings in Newark and Elizabeth. That can mean asking the judge for bond, applying for asylum or cancellation of removal, or appealing to the Board of Immigration Appeals when a decision goes against our client.

Questions New Jersey clients ask us

How much does an immigration lawyer cost in New Jersey?

Most green card, citizenship and family petitions have a flat fee. Cases at the Newark or Elizabeth immigration court are billed by the hour, and government filing fees are separate. Our guide to immigration lawyer costs lists typical ranges.

Can I get a free immigration consultation in NJ?

Yes. The first 20-minute consultation is free. Book it in the calendar on this page or call our Ewing office at (609) 924-8500.

How long does it take to get citizenship in New Jersey?

For applicants assigned to the Newark field office, USCIS estimated 14.5 months for an N-400 when we checked on August 18, 2026. Our N-400 processing time guide explains what can move that date.

Where is the immigration court in New Jersey?

Removal cases are heard at the Newark Immigration Court, 970 Broad Street in Newark, or at the Elizabeth Immigration Court inside the Elizabeth Detention Center on Evans Street when the person is detained. Your Notice to Appear names the court.

Does my immigration lawyer have to be in New Jersey?

No. Immigration law is federal, so a licensed immigration attorney in any state can file your case. A lawyer in New Jersey can also come with you to the interview at the Newark field office or to a hearing in court.

Can you help if a relative is detained in New Jersey?

Yes. People held at the Elizabeth Detention Center have their hearings at the Elizabeth Immigration Court. Call us at (609) 924-8500 as soon as you know where your relative is held. We first check whether a bond hearing is possible, which depends on how the person entered the United States and on their record.
